What is preflight?
Preflight is going over your completed job files to identify and correct potential problems before the files are sent to the printer.
Proper preflight procedures not only reduce your prepress costs, but also make sure your job is accurately output within your turnaround time.
What to look for
Some of the most common issues seen when preflighting files are:
- Wrong or missing fonts and supporting graphics
- Incomplete or corrupt files (check links panel to make sure everything is synced)
- Spot and process colors (check swatches, and convert there or in ad preflight)
- Graphics and images in RGB (wrong) color instead of CMYK (print) color. Black and white photos should be converted to CMYK as well.
- Low-resolution photos. Images should have 200 dpi minimum.
Preflight checklist
The following are a few questions to ask when preflighting your job.
- Have you thoroughly checked for typographical errors?
- Have you supplied PDFx1/a files?
- Have you checked for unwanted fonts? Use only Adobe supported fonts or make sure you outline those that are not.
- Are your folios correct?
- Have you created bleeds? Check full page ads for crop marks in the bleed area?
- Have you deleted unused colors and removed unwanted objects from the pasteboard?
- Are your photos and graphics properly formatted with the correct resolution and color settings? (200 dpi minimum and CMYK for print)
